Activity Breaks

‘Turn in through the stone pillars’,  the concluding direction for the journey to Decoy Country Cottages, yet the first indicator of a wonderful trip about to begin.

Situated in the undulating Meath countryside Decoy is just a stone’s throw from some of the historical gems of the Boyne Valley; Tara, the ancient seat of the pre-Christian High Kings of Ireland and Bective Abbey, Ireland’s second Cistercian Monastery dating back to 1147 are among the closest.  The stone setting for these very well appointed cottages is a two story wrap around barn conversion looking over a tidy courtyard.  Though self-catering, the facilities at Decoy Country Cottages mirror those of a hotel;   gym, a den with games for kids of all ages, an outdoor play area and barbecue spot.   The icing on the cake has to be the ‘Revive’ Day Spa offering a great range of massage and treatments; so guests can come to the Boyne Valley, step back 5,000 years yet leave feeling younger!!

Paula Irwin and her team have plenty of information and maps available to guests and can create itineraries to suit the needs and requirements of individuals or groups visiting Decoy which will make the most of the area.  Suggestions will cover a broad range of activities, such as visiting the wealth of historical and heritage sites; walks, golf, fishing, horse-riding, swimming and of course the option to chill out at Decoy and simply enjoy the surroundings.

‘Delightful Decoy’ offers the visitor a good mix of heritage, culture and fine dining. It is most probable that ‘turning in through the stone pillars’ will be a recurring event................

Decoy Country Cottages are very centrally situated; the Heritage towns of Trim and Kells, and the Market towns of Navan and Drogheda are all within a short driving distance. The peace and quiet surrounding the cottages, however, could suggest being a million miles from anywhere.

‘Decamp to Decoy’ includes admission to both Newgrange and Battle of the Boyne Sites.

Brú Na Boinne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This includes the magnificent passage tomb of Newgrange, which is over 5,000 years old.  The site also incorporates an interactive visitor centre, and the Knowth & Dowth burial chambers.  Access to Newgrange is through the visitor centre only.

The Battle of the Boyne visitor centre.  In 1690 King James and King William of Orange fought on the banks of the Boyne.  The British Throne and Religious power in Ireland were some of the issues at stake.  Weaponry Displays make it interesting for younger visitors.

Dinner at O’Brien’s Good Food & Wine House, in nearby Johnstown Village is a good suggestion for early on the stay as a return visit is a strong possibility.

Splash out at the National Aquatic Centre in the play zone, full of flumes and slides. Though this is a little further away (outside the Boyne Valley), it is an easy drive there and back.

Plenty of information and maps available to guests and can create itineraries to suit the needs and requirements of individuals or groups visiting Decoy, thus making the most of being in the area.

Borrow the bikes at Decoy and picnic at nearby Balrath Woods; Climb a Castle; Tee Off at one of the many Golf Courses in the area; Walk along the banks of the Boyne; Catch a show one of Meath’s Arts Centres; Shop ‘til you drop; Pick a winner at the Horse Racing; Support the local team at a Gaelic Football match, or simply opt to chill out at Decoy and simply enjoy the surroundings.
